The aim of the present work was to prepare floating Microbeads of Oxytetracycline HCl for controlled release delivery system. Oxytetracycline HCl a broad spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic commonly used for systemic therapy as well as locally for gastric or intestinal infections and additional mechanisms of action include antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive activity of Oxytetracycline HCl. In the present work Oxytetracycline HCl microbeads were formulated being sodium alginate by ionotropic gelation technique by varying alginate, CaCl2 and Tamarind gum concentrations. The compatibility of drug with the polymer was confirmed through the FT-IR studies. The prepared beads were evaluated for percentage drug loading, entrapment efficiency, surface morphology, and in vitro release characteristics . From this study, it could be concluded that the spherical and free flowing microbeads of Oxytetracycline HCl could be successfully prepared by ionotropic gelation technique with high entrapment efficiency and prolonged release characteristics.
